     Temilade Openiyi popularly known by her stage name Tems, is a Nigerian Born British Singer, Songwriter and Record producer. She became a Grammy award winner in early 2023 for her feature in Future's song, Wait for U alongside Drake. More info below




TEMS BIOGRAPHY



EARLY LIFE



     Tems was born on the 11th of June, 1995 in Lagos Nigeria. Though she was born in Lagos state, Tems is half cast, that's because her father is British and her Mother is Nigerian, so we can say she has dual citizenship or nationality.


     According to sources, Tems parents relocated to England for some years and at age 5, her parents got separated and she was raised (alongside her senior brother) by her mother.


     When they arrived in Nigeria after her parents separation, Tems lived with her mother in Ilupeju, Lekki Phase 1 later on and Ajah onward, all in Lagos state, Nigeria.


     For her education, Tems attended Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos state. She had her higher institution education in Monash South Africa University in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she studied Economics according to sources.



MUSIC CAREER


     Tems loved music from childhood (reportedly age 7) and she takes the famous American singer Beyonce, to be her role model. At first, Tems taught her voice was too deep for a girl, she thought she sounded like a man but later on, her music teacher helped her made her voice a better one, less deep and encouraged Tems to keep on pushing her dreams.


      Tems listened to popular international artistes like Destiny Child, Lil Wayne, Aaliyah and lots more. She joined a choir at the age of 17. She started producing music at the age of 20. She left her digital marketing job in 2018 and recorded her first single titled Mr Rebel then Looku Looku followed and then her breakout hit Try Me. Try me has over 2.8 Million views on YouTube.


     In September 25, 2020, Tems released her debut studio 7 Track EP titled For Broken Ears which included popular hits like Damages, Free Mind, Higher, The Key and lots more. In 2021 she released her second EP titled If Orange was a place after signing a record label deal with RCA Records.


     On October 30, 2021, she was featured in WizKid's song, Essence. The song was a hit at its release and had a remix with Canadain-American singer Justin Bieber.


    On 29 April 2022, Tems was featured alongside Drake on future's song, Wait for U which won the three each a Grammy award (her song higher was used as a melodic chorus in the song's background). In July 2022, Tems made a cover of Bob Marley's song, No Woman, No Cry as a soundtrack for Marvel Studios Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie. She also co-wrote Rihana's Lift Me Up soundtrack for same Marvel Studios (MCU) Movie.

     Tems has the following number of awards and recognitions as at the time this post was written.


– She was nominated for Best Alternative Song at the 2019 Headies Awards.

– Best Vocal Performance Female Category same year (2019).

– Next Rated Award Nomination at the 2020 Headies Awards alongside Omah Lay, Bella Shmurda and Oxlade.

– Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Song at the 2023 Grammy Award alongside Future and Drake for her performance on the song, Wait For U.

     Tems net worth is not actually known but can have an estimated value of about $250,000 and more.


CONTROVERSIES


     On 14 December, 2020, Tems was arrested and charged to court by the Ugandan Police Force for violating the Country's Covid-19 guidelines alongside Oman Lay and Muyiwa Awoniyi for having a concert that is prone to disease spreading. However, the charges were dropped after some hours.



GENRE


     Tems sings a combination of various genres which ranges from Alternative RNB, Afrobeats, Reggae and her song kind of have a more international audience than Nigerian her motherland, she's good at what she does.



RECORD LABEL


    Tems was signed as a recording artist once in RCA records but currently (as at the time this post was written) she is signed to Leading Vibez Record Label.
